Milan Linate is the best European airport. ‘Airport Council International’ (ACI), the association representing 500 airports in 55 countries in Europe, awarded Linate airport the Aci Europe Best Airport Award 2023 in the category of airports with between 5 and 10 million passengers.
The Milan city airport was awarded for its important work on sustainability and decarbonisation of the airport sector in recent years. ‘Green’ ways of accessing the airport thanks to the metro, the choice of alternative fuels (SAF and hydrogen) and Urban Air Mobility are among the main goals in which the Milan airport is investing in order to continue on its decarbonisation path. Milan Linate has achieved Airport Carbon Accreditation level 4+ and is committed to achieving Net Zero Emission in 2030, twenty years ahead of the target set by the European airport sector.
The judges also praised the innovative and technological designs used to make the passenger experience more dynamic, faster and safer. These include the new security controls with the new EDS-CB machines and FaceBoarding, which have brought the greatest results in terms of service quality.
At Milan Linate, latest-generation technologies have also been incorporated into the security area to simplify and speed up security checks. New EDS-CB (Explosive Detection Systems for Cabin Baggage) machines using CT technology have been installed. The new technology increases the effectiveness of security checks thanks to automatic explosives detection. The system’s high efficiency also allows for screening without the need to separate electronics and liquids from carry-on baggage.The innovation of Linate’s security system starts from check-in: with the ‘FaceBoarding system;, passengers can associate their biometric fingerprint with their ID and boarding pass and they now no longer have to show any ID until they board, speeding up transit through the various checkpoints.
The jury of the Aci Europe Best Airport Awards 2023 is composed of authoritative representatives of the European Commission, Aviation Advocacy, Flight Global, International Airport Review, International Transport Forum, SESAR 3Joint Undertaking and ECAC-European Civil Aviation Conference. The awards were presented to the winning airports during the ACI EUROPE/World Annual General Assembly, Conference and Exhibition 2023 Gala Dinner held yesterday in Barcelona.
